More fun in Tamriel, our favorite continent on the planet Nirn.


Except this time it isn't on a console and modding has become amazing, extreme, and easy. Also, we're streaming our games to one another over Steam. Yes, that is every bit as cool as it sounds and more.
Let's get started:

Setup Skyrim for Modding through the Nexus

Step 1: Get Skyrim on Steam. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/72850/)

Step 2: Register for an account at http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/? (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/?) if you don't have one from Fallout modding already.

Step 3: Install the Nexus Mod Manager. (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/modmanager/?) - Follow this (How_to_install_Skyrim_mods (http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/How_to_install_Skyrim_mods)) tutorial if you have any issues or just have your Steam install location inside the Program Files folder. 

Step 4: Install the Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE)
Install SKSE from Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/365720/SKSE), or download the installer from skse.silverlock.org (http://skse.silverlock.org) and run it.

Step 5: Run and setup Nexus Mod Manager(NMM); The program should guide you through the setup and searching for Skyrim.

Step 6: Once setup, there should be a button on the upper left of the NMM window labeled "Launch Skyrim" -> Select the drop down arrow beside this button and select "Launch SKSE". Make sure steam is running and then click the button which should now be labeled "Launch SKSE".

Step 6: Test Skyrim by loading a previous save or starting a new game. If the game doesn't crash, you should be good to start browsing the Nexus and installing mods.

and here  http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/categories/? (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/categories/?) to begin browsing for mods.
For every mod you consider, please RTFM. No, really. Read the description, maybe a few recent posts about it, then browse the mod's files section and read all the choices, and ONLY THEN select the appropriate file and download by clicking its green colored "Download with Manager" button. NMM should automatically download the file.

Step 8: Right click your new mod(s) and select "Install and activate"; NMM should do the rest.

Step 9: Troubleshooting - If you have a lot of mods or just want to make sure you did everything right, I recommend using LOOT (https://loot.github.io/). Just run this program after you've installed all your mods and select the icon in the upper right with three horizontal bars and the tooltip "Sort Plugins". This will generate comments and such for your mod/plugin load order. If no glaring errors, click the "Apply" button in the upper right. Close LOOT if desired and click "Launch SKSE" within the NMM.
NOTE - This is not a glaring error: "(Contains 619 ITM records, 82 deleted references and 57 deleted navmeshes. Clean with TES5Edit. A cleaning guide is available here.)" <- Okay to leave these if a green check-mark is still by the mod. Step 10: Obsess over continuously gathering more mods and ENJOY!  8)

Another cool troubleshooting tactic we found is this:
Skyrim Savegame Scanner (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/15054/?)
"Utility displays some info from .ess savegames (player stats, plugins load order, papyrus script names and variables, FormIDs)."

If you ever get into the situation where you've had to re-install Skyrim & your mods and have a savegame that crashes when you load it after telling you that "This save relies on content that is no longer present..." etc.
Use that scanner to tell what mods with what load order were used in conjunction with the savegame you scan.
Saved the day, yesterday.  8)
